I get this question quite often from my clients. They don't understand the process enough to know what makes booth spray tans possibly dangerous for your overall appearance. I. Going to talk about what I have learned in my time as a spray tan technician.
Spray tan booths are automated. They don't have a person guiding the spray tan solution and ensuring your body is evenly sprayed. This is the biggest appeal to people because they don't want someone seeing them naked. Every experienced spray tan clinician understands the anxiety that people face when being naked and vulnerable, but you have to remind yourself that spray tan clinicians have seen it all.
Cleanliness is a huge part of my business. I don't want any contamination between products because this can affect the integrity of the spray tan. When you go to an automated booth, you have no idea when the last time it has been thoroughly cleaned. There are certain procedures that spray tan clinicians must go through to make sure their guns are clean and ready to use. I clean my gun every night, but this may not be true for certain automated booths.
Over development is another issue people struggle with in automated booth. Since there isn't a person there to instruct you exactly how to stand, you risk getting too much solution in certain areas and not enough in other spots. This is commonly seen when people leave and have orange hands and feet. The soles of the feet pick up spray tan solution in the booth and absorb it much faster than the rest of the body.
Finally, a lack of a spray tan clinician means you don't have anybody to text at 11pm when something goes wrong with your spray tan. I have personally driven to people's houses to fix spray tans when disaster strikes.
These are just a few things to consider when deciding whether or not to get a custom airbrush tan or to go to an automated booth.
